The old gunslinger is set to join the Indianapolis Colts practice squad currently. Signed today after his 44th birthday December 8th. Lacking depth & seemingly staying in touch with Shane Steichen according to JJ Watt on X.com. Chris Ballard made the call to get the aging veteran in the building. This will be his 2nd stint with the organization.

At the start of the regular season the Colts QB room consisted of:

Daniel Jones

Anthony Richardson

Riley Leonard

All now currently injured. Jones tore his Achilles in Sundays game vs the Houston Texans, while also dealing with a fractured fibula in the other leg. Richardson suffered orbital bone fracture in his face that required surgery. He’s been on injury reserved since October. Leonard who replaced Jones in Sundays game is dealing with a knee problem.

The signing doesn’t come as a surprise after it being reported that Shane and Phillip have been in touch helping him run the same offense for his high school team. Where he led them to the semifinals where the evidently lost. Freeing him up for a return to the NFL.

With that being said; this signing seems to be very desperate obviously. Questioning whether Ballard would have brought him back had he not already known the playbook. It is noted that Shane was his old QB coach for a few seasons with the Chargers. So the relationship is already established and the knowledge of the scheme.

Jim Bob Cooter and Shane run an offense mixed offense. Passing on 53.8% of the plays ran this season. Mixing in the run to wear down teams and sustain long drives. Running a lot of 12 – personnel [1 RB , 2 TEs , 2 WR]. Play action along with RPOs in there as well. In the redzone being one of the best teams in the league with a 65% touchdown rate. Such as of late has been dwindling down because of penalties and occasionally play calling.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Houston Texans

All these teams have been surging and have great defenses. Daniel Jones , Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard are all mobile QBs and can move the ball down the field. With Jones being the clear better passer. The key word “Mobile”. Will Shane and Jim if Leonard doesn’t get the go Sunday switch up the passing play calls? Jonathan Taylor will clearly be heavily used but what happens when the run is stopped and the defense is blitzing this 44 year old QB. The OLine has been fine this season, better in the first half more than late. Still very much serviceable.

I have faith in the Colts and wondering if they will play Richardson if giving the health all go. If Rivers can win us into the wildcard that’s all and good. What if he doesn’t and plays like a 44 year old QB that hasn’t played in years. This season might be a lost cause it might not. I’m just still very puzzled at this.
